Tournament Poker Player of the Year Honors
Tournament Poker Player of the Year Honors
A long year of tournament poker is about to come to an end with the 4th Annual Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Millions of dollars are at stake at this high profile event but just as much is being made of the final countdown to Player of the Year honors. Whether it's the money or the title of world poker champion, the very best players in the world are set to be on hand in an attempt to secure a place in poker history.
A year ago, points frontrunner Daniel Negreanu proceeded to fall behind David "The Dragon" Pham with but two events remaining. Needing a ninth place finish in the final, buy-in main event to lock down player of the year honors, Negreanu proceeded to win the whole event, taking home nearly $2,000,000, and the unquestioned distinction of player of the year.
In 2005, Californian John Phan's is seeing a similar rush on his top spot, a ranking he has held for most of the year. Long-time professional, Men "The Master" Nguyen, has put together a strong finishing kick for the year and is within a couple hundred points of Phan as the year comes to a close. Nguyen is clearly battle-tested having taken home the top player honor as recently as 2002.
On their heels come some of the most famous names in Poker including Tony Ma, Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi and players with names befitting that honor, Chip Jett and Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari. Action is set to be completed by December 16th, just in time to crown a champion for the holiday season.
