Asia-Pacific Poker Tour Kicks Off in August

PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker site, recently announced the launch of Asia Pacific’s first poker tour, the PokerStars APPT. Covering the region from Korea to Australia, the tour promises to bring world-class poker action to some very beautiful and exotic destinations and luxurious casinos.

“One of the most exciting aspects of being a poker player is the incredible travel opportunities it offers,” said Sarne Lightman, co-founder of the APPT. “Every year PokerStars sends thousands of poker players to compete in events across Europe, the US and the Caribbean. The launch of the PokerStars APPT brings a whole new dimension to poker in Asia and marks poker’s emergence into a truly global sport.”

The tour launch event will be held from August 23 to 26 at the five-star Hyatt Hotel and Casino, Manila in the Philippines. The second event is scheduled for the September 27 to 30 at the Sheraton Walkerhill Hotel and Casino in Seoul, South Korea. These are the first major televised tournaments in either of these countries. Another three events are expected for 2007 which will be announced later in the year.

The Grand Final takes place in December at the StarCity Casino in Sydney, Australia. At AUD6,300 buy-in, this event will be held in the poker room overlooking the city’s world famous Sydney Harbor Bridge.

The main events will all feature No Limit Hold’Em while side events, Sit & Go tournaments or cash games would also include Stud or Omaha. Entrants will have to sign a TV release form. The APPT Seoul event, however, is closed to Korean nationals by order of the South Korean government. The only exemptions apply to Korean nationals who are landed permanent residents of other countries and have documented proof of the same.

PokerStars-sponsored players are required to wear the PokerStars logo gear throughout the tournament.

Overseeing APPT tournaments will be the region’s most prominent tournament director, Danny McDonagh, who also directed the Aussie Millions, which has earned the reputation of being one of the world’s best run and most successful tournaments.

“Joining the Pokerstars APPT is a great opportunity to enable me to continue my work developing poker in the Asia Pacific region,” said McDonagh. “PokerStars has achieved unprecedented success in Europe with the PokerStars EPT and I am very excited about bringing the same quality of televised world class event to the currently un-tapped Asian market.”

In addition to tournament play, the PokerStars APPT is working closely with local tourism boards to include a wide range of tourism experiences designed to introduce the players and their partners to some of the beauty and cultural diversity of these exotic locations.

“Poker is still at an early stage in many of the countries we hope to visit with the APPT,” said Jeffrey Haas, President and Co-founder of the PokerStars APPT. “But for those forward-thinking authorities that embrace the opportunities it offers, the PokerStars APPT also promises to kick-start a whole new type of tourism in the region. The APPT tournaments will be the first major events of their kind in Korea and the Philippines and we believe players from all over the world will come to take part.

“This in turn will help stimulate tremendous local economic benefit because one of our key aims is to ensure players, their friends and families enjoy the local sights and experiences. To this end, we are working closely with local tourism boards to provide all our visitors with some amazing opportunities to enjoy these beautiful destinations.”

Satellite tournaments will be available on PokerStars.com from July 1 with buy-ins starting from as little as $22. PokerStars will also be running freerolls for every event so that every poker player across the world will be able to compete in the events, regardless of their spending capacity.

PokerStars currently has over nine million players worldwide. It was the first site to introduce features that became the industry standard and claims some of the highest levels of security and customer support in the online poker world. To date, PokerStars has dealt out over ten billion hands and run more than 50 million poker tournaments, awarding well over $7 billion in prize money. It runs over 50,000 tournaments every day. In February 2006, PokerStars.com entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the first poker website ever to reach the 100,000 simultaneous player mark. The PokerStars Sunday Million weekly event is the largest weekly tournament in the world with a $1 million guaranteed tournament prize pool.

PokerStars is the title sponsor of the European Poker Tour (EPT) and the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Each fall, they host the world's largest online tournament, the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), which featured a record prize pool of over $18 million in 2006. PokerStars also sponsors major events around the globe, such as the World Cup of Poker and other exciting tournaments.
