Texas House Speaker Opens Door for Casino Debate
Posted by: Poker Man on April 8, 2005 11:18 AM

Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick is calling on casino supporters to contact their state legislators in the upcoming 2 weeks. He says a lot of people and groups want money from the Legislature. Somehow, lawmakers must find ways to fund those requests.

"I still don't think there are 100 votes in the House to approve casino gambling," he said. Since a constitutional amendment would be needed to approve casinos, a two thirds vote is required for approval.

Several forms of casino gambling have been proposed in the legislature. These range from limited forms of video poker at race tracks only to full blown Las Vegas style casinos with operations in every corner of Texas.

State Comptroller Carole Strayhorn has long pushed for expansion of gambling. Strayhorn has estimated that casinos could mean an additional one billion dollars or more in revenue for the state.
