The Rise Of Poker Status
We’ve all seen the poker stereotypes; Russian gangsters, mafia henchmen, and desperate rounder. What were once the “average Joe’s” notions of the game are slowly fading away. The infamous back room filled with cigar smoke and seedy characters have been replaced by a ready for prime-time TV sport. Some long-timers are mourning and some are rejoicing, as usual the poker world is not in agreement.
The rise of pokers status and its elevation by many into a sport has come hand in hand with the internet and 300 channel TV line-ups. The need for cable networks to find cheap, affordable and entertaining offerings has pushed this once “underworld game” into the global limelight. Along with that came the internet which has given many the opportunity to learn and play the game. Coupled together the two have given a rebirth to a new and sexier version of the sport.
The sport of poker has not only found acceptance amongst common people, it has become a celebrity badge of honor as well. Where as twenty years ago a poker playing starlet would have raised eyebrows we now see many boasting of their skills on national TV. In an almost bizarre twist of reality we see stars of film and sport rushing to mix with the poker elite. The grizzly old poker veteran has transformed from social outcast to a cult hero adored by famous and not so famous alike. With the celebrity following has come a new found exotic sexiness to the game.
Many are now first exposed to poker by the various celebrity tournaments on TV. Many of these filmed at exclusive casinos beyond the common mans reality. With that we see the guy next door playing in the high stakes tournaments at the same exclusive resorts. The idea of us being there with them, strikes a deep chord with many. The thought of being able to become a poker celebrity and rub
elbows with and in some cases be adored by the elite drives pokers sexiness even further.
Not all the rounders, card sharks, and poker room regulars are happy at this. Some have grumbled the games ambience and culture has flown out the window and the celebrity cult has stolen the show. Regardless most agree that the new exposure has done much for poker and revitalized this casino classic. With new players arriving everyday the back room game has become an acceptable and in many cases profitable sport.
