World Series of Poker 2006 Main Contenders

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is again upon us, and it is time to place your bets as to who is going to come out on top. There are so many world-class competitors to choose from, and each online site and bookmakers has their opinion on who will triumph. But who are the favourites, and what are their odds? If you are new to poker or a seasoned pro, it pays to know who is hot and who isn’t at this year’s World Series, as if you play your bets right you could walk away with your own prize.

The event itself

This year will mark the 37th annual World Series of Poker, and the 8,000-person event will run from 25th June to 10th August at Harrah’s Rio Casino in Vegas. The event comprises of 45 2 and 3 day events, with the final being held as a 1 day event on August 10th. The final winner will likely walk away with a fortune, as well as the knowledge that they have beaten the best. This world’s largest poker tournament will be bigger and better than ever this year, with a project prize pot of $10 million.

Ivey is red hot

Although there are many great players to choose from, the early favourite is Phil Ivey, with the professional poker player being put as low as 30-1 in some places. However, more favourable odds at 125-1 can be had. Often referred to as ‘The Tiger Woods of Poker’, his aggressive style has seen him become a major force in recent times, and many believe that this is his year to win the WSOP’s top prize. Of course, there are many other players right behind him, including the three most recent world champions. Joseph Hachem, Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker all sit around the 150-1 to 600-1 mark on most online sites. Hachem is the favourite of these three, and will be looking to repeat his victory in last year’s tournament, where he defeated 5,618 players and won a record $7.5 million in prize money. Aside from these stars, the women should not be forgotten. Although a woman has never won the tournament in its 36-year history, with great female players such as Kathy Liebert and Liz Lieu around, this could be the year.

Obscure bets

Of course, there are always more obscure bets to be had on such events, and this year is no exception. Some sites are offering odds on what age the winner will be to the exact hand that they will use to win the final. If you can think of something to bet on, then there are probably odds already available for it. And with the spectacle attracting everyone from the wannabe stars to the very best players in the world, there are sure to be some surprises along the way. However, what can be certain is that whoever walks away with the first prize will become very rich indeed.
